Experimental investigation of the stability of Fe-rich carbonates in the lower mantle

چکیده
[1] The fate of carbonates in the Earth’s mantle plays a key role in the geodynamical carbon cycle. Although iron is a major component of the Earth’s lower mantle, the stability of Fe-bearing carbonates has rarely been studied. Here we present experimental results on the stability of Fe-rich carbonates at pressures ranging from 40 to 105 GPa and temperatures of 1450–3600 K, corresponding to depths within the Earth’s lower mantle of about 1000–2400 km. Samples of iron oxides and iron-magnesium oxides were loaded into CO2 gas and laser heated in a diamond-anvil cell. The nature of crystalline run products was determined in situ by X-ray diffraction, and the recovered samples were studied by analytical transmission electron microscopy and scanning transmission X-ray microscopy. We show that Fe is systematically involved in redox reactions with CO2 yielding to Fe-bearing phases and diamonds. We also report a new Fe-bearing high-pressure phase resulting from the transformation of FeCO3 at pressures exceeding 40 GPa. The presence of both diamonds and an oxidized C-bearing phase suggests that oxidized and reduced forms of carbon might coexist in the deep mantle. Finally, the observed reactions potentially provide a new mechanism for diamond formation at great depth.

High-Pressure Orthorhombic Ferromagnesite as a Potential Deep-Mantle Carbon Carrier
Knowledge of the physical and chemical properties of candidate deep-carbon carriers such as ferromagnesite [(Mg,Fe)CO₃] at high pressure and temperature of the deep mantle is necessary for our understanding of deep-carbon storage as well as the global carbon cycle of the planet. Previous studies have reported very different scenarios for the (Mg,Fe)CO₃ system at deep-mantle conditions including...

Magnesiowüstite [(Mg,Fe)O] is the second most abundant mineral of Earth's lower mantle. Understanding its stability under lower mantle conditions is crucial for interpreting the physical and chemical properties of the whole Earth. Previous studies in an externally heated diamond anvil cell suggested that magnesiowüstites decompose into two components, Fe-rich and Mg-rich magnesiowüstites at 86 ...
متن کاملTradeoffs in chemical and thermal variations in the post-perovskite phase transition: Mixed phase regions in the deep lower mantle?
The discovery of a phase transition in Mg-rich perovskite (Pv) to a post-perovskite (pPv) phase at lower mantle depths and its relationship to D′′, lower mantle heterogeneity and iron content prompted an investigation of the relative importance of lower mantle compositional and temperature fluctuations in creating topographic undulations on mixed phase regions. Above the transition, Mgrich Pv m...
متن کاملStability of ferrous-iron-rich bridgmanite under reducing midmantle conditions.
Our current understanding of the electronic state of iron in lower-mantle minerals leads to a considerable disagreement in bulk sound speed with seismic measurements if the lower mantle has the same composition as the upper mantle (pyrolite). In the modeling studies, the content and oxidation state of Fe in the minerals have been assumed to be constant throughout the lower mantle. Here, we repo...

: Cheshmeh-Bid chromite deposit is located in Nayriz ophiolite, 200 km northeast of Shiraz. The ophiolite sequences in this area are including ultramafic rocks (dunite, harzburgite, and pyroxenite). In this deposit, chromites are located in the mantle-crust transition zone and are enclosed by a dunite cover. Based on chemical studies of the major elements, chromite is depleted of Al and Ti elem...
